The state’s rule

Washington sets the most children one adult may care for by age, and the largest group size, in WAC 110-300-0356(5).

Infants (birth through 11 months): one adult for every four.

Toddlers (12 through 29 months): one adult for every seven.

Preschoolers (30 months through 6 years, not in kindergarten): one adult for every ten.

School-age children: one adult for every fifteen.

Infant: now $4,158 a month; was $3,955 (+$203, +5.1%).

Lowest full-time price: now $3,010 a month; was $2,917 (+$93, +3.2%). Seen in September 2026.

Why this happens

Across the country, child care prices rise most at the start of the school year. In federal price data from 2007 to 2025, August and September carried about half of a typical year’s increase.

Ask them: when the new price takes effect, whether it applies to families already enrolled, and when the next increase is planned.
