What we found

Lee's Summit sits southeast of Kansas City proper and has become one of the most popular family destinations on the Missouri side of the metro. The city's combination of good schools, newer housing, and lower cost of living has attracted a wave of young families -- and childcare capacity has grown to meet them. You'll find a mix of newer chain centers, established independents, church-affiliated programs, and home daycares across the city.

What distinguishes Lee's Summit from the Kansas-side suburbs is value. Comparable programs here tend to cost 10-20% less than Johnson County equivalents, and Missouri's childcare subsidy programs provide additional support for qualifying families.

What Childcare Costs in Lee's Summit

Lee's Summit childcare runs $900 to $1,500 per month for full-time care. Center-based infant care costs $1,050 to $1,500. Toddler and preschool rates at centers range from $900 to $1,250. Home daycares are typically $750 to $1,100. Church-affiliated programs often offer the best value, with preschool rates below $900 per month for part-day programs.

The Waitlist Reality

Lee's Summit's expanding childcare market means waitlists are short -- typically 1 to 4 months for infant care. Many programs have immediate availability for toddler and preschool-age children. The newest centers on the south and east sides of the city tend to have the most openings as they build enrollment.

What to Watch For

  • Missouri subsidies. Missouri's childcare subsidy programs can significantly reduce costs for qualifying families. Check eligibility -- the income thresholds may be higher than you expect.
  • Newer vs. established. Lee's Summit has both longtime community programs and brand-new franchise locations. Newer doesn't mean better, and established doesn't mean outdated. Visit both types before deciding.
  • Missouri licensing. Lee's Summit providers operate under Missouri regulations. Missouri and Kansas have different ratio requirements and inspection standards. Both are reflected in our scoring.
  • Commute patterns. Many Lee's Summit families commute to downtown KC or the Kansas side. If your commute goes west, consider whether a program closer to your workplace saves meaningful time.

Every provider above has been individually researched. Scores reflect licensing records, staff data, pricing transparency, and editorial review -- not advertising or self-reported claims.
