What Childcare Costs Per Hour in Kansas City
Monthly tuition is a misleading way to compare childcare. A part-time program at $600/month for three mornings a week and a full-day center at $1,200/month look like a 2x gap. But on a per-hour basis, the math often flips. This report normalizes every provider's price to cost per care hour — what you actually pay for each hour your child is in the program.
KC has the narrowest $/hr range of any Shortlist city. The $2.52–$15.40 spread looks wide, but the $15.40 outlier is Monarch Montessori in Overland Park — a 3-hour/day program. Strip that out and the ceiling drops to around $8/hr. Most KC programs cluster between $3–$6/hr, meaningfully cheaper than coastal cities on a per-hour basis.
How We Calculate Cost Per Hour
Formula: monthly tuition ÷ (days per week × 4.33 weeks × hours per day). We only show $/hr where we have schedule data for a provider — no defaults, no estimates. 43 of 52 KC-area providers currently have complete data.
The Most Expensive Neighborhoods (by $/hr)
High $/hr in KC often reflects short-schedule programs — Montessori and enrichment-focused centers that run 3–4 hours per day rather than full-day care. Monthly tuition for these programs can look affordable even when the hourly rate is high.

The Most Affordable Neighborhoods (by $/hr)
Low $/hr in KC reflects programs running longer hours — full-day centers spread the monthly cost across more care hours. The Missouri-side neighborhoods and outer-ring suburbs consistently come in below $4/hr.

Johnson County: Cost Per Hour
Johnson County (Kansas-side) averages $5–$6/hr across its suburbs — higher than the Missouri side, but still well below comparable suburbs in Seattle or Chicago. The intra-county spread is notable: Overland Park's Monarch Montessori at $15.40/hr sits in the same county as Roeland Park's most affordable center at $2.52/hr.
| Neighborhood | Providers | Avg $/hr | $/hr Range | Avg Monthly |

Key Findings
Monthly tuition is unreliable for comparison. A $1,200/month program running 5 full days costs around $5/hr. A $1,200/month program running 3 hours a day costs over $18/hr. Same tuition, 3–4x the hourly cost. Always ask about the schedule before comparing prices.
Johnson County (Kansas) vs. Missouri side. Johnson County averages $5–$6/hr; Missouri-side neighborhoods average $3–$5/hr. But the quality distribution is similar. Families commuting across the state line for work may find the Missouri side a better value on a per-hour basis.
Most programs cluster between $3–$6/hr. Despite the $2.52–$15.40 range, the outlier at $15.40/hr is a single 3-hour/day Montessori program. The real ceiling for full-day KC programs is around $8/hr — and the typical range is narrower than any other Shortlist city.
