What we found

Leawood is the premium tier of Johnson County childcare. The city's affluence shows up in the provider landscape: smaller class sizes, enrichment-focused curricula, well-maintained facilities, and programs that invest in staff retention. If you're willing to pay more for childcare and want the highest-quality experience available on the Kansas side, Leawood is where to look.

The provider mix here leans toward established independent programs, premium chain locations, and a handful of well-regarded church-affiliated preschools. Home daycares are less common than in other KC suburbs. Programs in Leawood tend to emphasize early academics, enrichment activities, and school readiness more than providers in neighboring cities.

What Childcare Costs in Leawood

Leawood childcare runs $1,100 to $1,800 per month for full-time care. Center-based infant care costs $1,400 to $1,800. Toddler and preschool rates at centers range from $1,100 to $1,500. Enrichment-focused programs with added programming (music, language, STEM) can run $100-$200 more per month. Leawood is generally 15-25% more expensive than Overland Park or Olathe for comparable care.

The Waitlist Reality

Leawood's most sought-after programs maintain 4 to 9 month waitlists for infant care. Premium independent programs and popular Montessori schools fill fastest. Chain locations tend to have shorter waits. For fall preschool enrollment, plan to apply in the winter or early spring preceding.

What to Watch For

  • Premium pricing. Leawood programs charge more, but that doesn't automatically mean better outcomes for your child. Compare what the premium buys -- smaller ratios, specialized programming, staff credentials -- and decide if those differences matter to your family.
  • Enrichment vs. play. Leawood programs lean academic and enrichment-heavy. If you prefer a play-based or child-led approach, ask specifically about the daily schedule and teaching philosophy. Not every Leawood program fits the play-based mold.
  • Leawood vs. south Overland Park. The border between Leawood and south Overland Park is blurry. Some excellent programs sit just on the OP side at lower price points. Don't limit your search to city boundaries.
  • Kansas licensing. Leawood providers operate under Kansas regulations, which have stricter ratio requirements for younger children than Missouri. All licensing records are reflected in our research.

Every provider above has been individually researched. Scores reflect licensing records, staff data, pricing transparency, and editorial review -- not advertising or self-reported claims.
