What we found

Northbrook is a practical suburb for working families. Unlike some North Shore communities that cater to stay-at-home parents with half-day programs, Northbrook has a childcare infrastructure designed around two-income households. You'll find large centers with extended hours, park district programs with before- and after-care, and chain operations that offer the consistency and backup care options that working parents need.

The provider mix is broader than most North Shore suburbs. Northbrook has national chains (Bright Horizons, KinderCare), established independent centers, park district preschools, church and temple-affiliated programs, Montessori schools, and home daycares. That range creates real choice across price points and educational philosophies. The Northbrook Court mall area and the Dundee Road corridor have the highest concentration of providers.

What Childcare Costs in Northbrook

Northbrook childcare runs $1,400 to $2,600 per month for full-time care. Chain center infant care costs $2,000 to $2,600. Independent center infant care is comparable at $1,900 to $2,400. Toddler and preschool rates range from $1,400 to $2,100. Park district preschool programs are among the most affordable options at $1,200 to $1,600 but are often half-day only. Home daycares run $1,400 to $1,800.

The Waitlist Reality

Northbrook waitlists are shorter than most North Shore communities - typically 3 to 6 months for infant care at the most popular programs. Chain centers occasionally have immediate availability, especially at newer locations. Park district programs fill during their registration windows (usually February or March for fall). Home daycares sometimes have openings with just a few weeks' notice.

What to Watch For

  • Extended hours. Northbrook programs are more likely to offer early drop-off (6:30-7:00 AM) and late pickup (6:00-6:30 PM) than programs in smaller North Shore villages. If your work schedule requires extended hours, Northbrook has more options than Winnetka or Glencoe.
  • Chain vs. independent. Northbrook has both. Chains offer employer partnerships, backup care, and consistency across locations. Independents offer community, flexibility, and often stronger lead teacher retention. Evaluate based on what matters most to your family.
  • Park district value. Northbrook Park District preschool programs offer strong programming at below-market prices. The trade-off is usually half-day schedules and a school-year calendar. If you can make the schedule work, the value is hard to beat.
  • Northbrook vs. Deerfield vs. Glenview. These suburbs blend into each other. Expanding your search to include all three significantly increases your options with minimal commute impact. Glenview in particular has a large childcare market.
  • Employer benefits. Northbrook's corporate parks (Allstate, Underwriters Laboratories, and others) mean many families have access to employer childcare benefits. Check your benefits package before comparing sticker prices - it can change which programs make financial sense.
