What Childcare Costs Per Hour in Chicago
Monthly tuition is a misleading way to compare childcare. A $1,200/month program running 5 full days and a $1,200/month program running 3 mornings a week look identical on paper. They are not — one costs roughly $5/hr and the other roughly $20/hr. This report normalizes every provider's price to cost per care hour — what you actually pay for each hour your child is in the program.
The real gap: 17x. The cheapest provider (Da Vinci Waldorf School in Wauconda at $2.31/hr) and the most expensive (JCC Chicago Early Childhood at Am Shalom in Glencoe at $38.49/hr for a 3-day × 2-hour schedule) are in the same metro area. But most Chicago programs cluster between $5–$13/hr.
How We Calculate Cost Per Hour
Formula: monthly tuition ÷ (days per week × 4.33 weeks × hours per day). We only show $/hr where we have schedule data for a provider — no defaults, no estimates. 65 of 80 Chicago-area providers currently have complete data.
The Most Expensive Neighborhoods (by $/hr)
High $/hr doesn't always mean high monthly bills. Several North Shore programs are expensive per hour because they run short part-time schedules — the monthly tuition looks modest, but the hourly rate is steep.
| Neighborhood | Providers | Avg $/hr | $/hr Range | Avg Monthly |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Highland Park | 3 | $18.99 | $15.40–$23.09 | $933 |
| Glencoe | 4 | $17.90 | $6.16–$38.49 | $925 |
| Winnetka | 4 | $16.80 | $5.54–$28.87 | $1,499 |
| River North | 1 | $12.93 | $12.93 | $2,800 |
| Streeterville | 4 | $11.70 | $7.63–$18.41 | $2,792 |
| Old Town | 4 | $9.45 | $6.05–$12.83 | $1,851 |
| West Loop | 9 | $8.49 | $6.30–$11.10 | $1,857 |
The Most Affordable Neighborhoods (by $/hr)
Low $/hr reflects programs that run longer hours or more days per week — spreading the monthly cost across more care hours. City neighborhoods with cooperative or home-based programs appear here alongside some North Shore suburbs.
| Neighborhood | Providers | Avg $/hr | $/hr Range | Avg Monthly |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Irving Park | 1 | $6.47 | $6.47 | $1,400 |
| South Loop | 1 | $6.30 | $6.30 | $1,500 |
| Evanston | 12 | $5.79 | $2.94–$10.45 | $1,189 |
| Northbrook | 2 | $5.67 | $4.62–$6.72 | $1,300 |
| Pilsen | 1 | $2.77 | $2.77 | $600 |
| Wauconda | 1 | $2.31 | $2.31 | $500 |
North Shore: Cost Per Hour
North Shore programs show the widest spread in $/hr of any submarket in our data. Enrichment-focused part-time programs drive the averages up, while full-week programs in the same towns are much more competitive on an hourly basis.

| Highland Park | 3 | $18.99 | $15.40–$23.09 | $933 |

Key Findings
Monthly tuition is unreliable for comparison. The same $1,200/month can be $5/hr or $20/hr depending on schedule. A program charging $1,200/month for 5 full days costs $5.54/hr. The same tuition for a 3-day × 2-hour program costs $21.41/hr. Always ask about the schedule before comparing prices.
North Shore programs have the widest $/hr range of any submarket. Glencoe runs $6.16–$38.49/hr within a single neighborhood. The driver: part-time enrichment programs with short daily schedules inflate the per-hour cost even when monthly tuition is modest. Families comparing monthly rates across these programs will reach the wrong conclusions.
Most Chicago programs cluster between $5–$13/hr. Despite the $2.31–$38.49 range, the majority of providers fall in a much tighter band. The outliers at the top are very short schedules (high $/hr); at the bottom, Waldorf and alternative programs with longer days and lower tuition.
