What we found

Northgate has transformed from a mall-anchored suburb into a genuine urban neighborhood, anchored by the Northgate light rail station that opened in 2021 and the redevelopment of the former Northgate Mall into a mixed-use community hub. For families, the appeal is clear: light rail access to downtown and the U-District, more affordable housing than central Seattle neighborhoods, and a childcare market with real options at accessible price points.

The provider landscape includes chain centers near the commercial corridors, independent programs in the residential areas, and home daycares throughout. Northgate’s proximity to Licton Springs, Lake City, and Victory Heights means families here have access to a wider childcare market than the neighborhood alone suggests.

What Childcare Costs in Northgate

Northgate childcare runs $1,200 to $2,200 per month for full-time care. Center-based infant care costs $1,600 to $2,200. Toddler and preschool rates range from $1,200 to $1,800. Home daycares are typically $1,100 to $1,600. Northgate is 10-20% less expensive than Green Lake or Wallingford for comparable care.

The Waitlist Reality

Northgate waitlists are moderate — typically 3 to 6 months for infant care. The neighborhood’s growing capacity means newer programs have availability. Chain centers near the commercial district may have shorter waits than independent programs. Home daycares vary — contact directly for current availability.

What to Watch For

  • Light rail factor. The Northgate station makes downtown, Capitol Hill, and U-District accessible without a car. If you work in any of these areas, a Northgate program means childcare and commute in the same direction.
  • Affordability. Northgate offers central Seattle access at north-end prices. If Green Lake or Wallingford is over budget, Northgate is the logical alternative with transit connectivity.
  • Neighborhood transformation. Northgate is actively redeveloping. New housing and commercial space may bring new childcare programs. Check back periodically if initial options don’t fit.
  • WA DCYF licensing. All Northgate providers operate under Washington DCYF regulations. Licensing records are reflected in our scoring.
