What we found

Kirkland sits on the eastern shore of Lake Washington with a downtown that still feels like a small town — parks along the waterfront, locally owned shops, and a genuine sense of community. That character carries into childcare. Kirkland has strong community preschools, several well-regarded nature-based programs that use the city's extensive park system, and a mix of centers and home daycares across its neighborhoods.

Kirkland's childcare market is smaller than Bellevue's but more manageable. Programs tend to draw from the immediate neighborhood rather than pulling families from across the Eastside. Juanita, Totem Lake, Houghton, and downtown Kirkland each have their own clusters of providers.

What Childcare Costs in Kirkland

Kirkland childcare runs $1,700 to $2,800 per month for full-time care. Center-based infant care costs $2,200 to $2,800. Toddler and preschool rates range from $1,700 to $2,300. Home daycares are typically $1,600 to $2,100. Kirkland is slightly less expensive than downtown Bellevue but more expensive than Redmond for comparable programs.

The Waitlist Reality

Kirkland waitlists average 4 to 9 months for infant care — shorter than Bellevue but still requiring advance planning. Community preschools affiliated with local churches or parks tend to fill in early spring for the following September. Home daycares sometimes have openings with just a few weeks' notice, especially for toddler and preschool spots.

What to Watch For

  • Nature programming. Kirkland's park system is one of the Eastside's best, and several providers here build their curriculum around outdoor exploration. If nature education is a priority, Kirkland is a strong fit. Ask how much time children spend outside and what outdoor spaces look like in winter.
  • Neighborhood clusters. Kirkland's neighborhoods are distinct. Juanita has a different vibe and provider mix than Totem Lake or downtown. Search within the specific area that makes sense for your commute rather than all of Kirkland.
  • Google campus effect. Google's Kirkland campus has increased demand for childcare in the Totem Lake area specifically. Programs near the campus fill faster than those in south Kirkland or Juanita.
  • Cross-city searching. Kirkland borders both Bellevue and Redmond. If your preferred Kirkland program has a long wait, expanding to north Bellevue or west Redmond adds options with minimal commute impact.
