Ballard has transformed from a Scandinavian fishing village into one of Seattle's most in-demand family neighborhoods — and childcare here reflects that shift. We researched every licensed provider so you can compare them side by side.

Ballard has changed more than almost any Seattle neighborhood in the last decade. New apartment buildings, breweries, and restaurants have drawn thousands of young families — but childcare capacity hasn't kept up. The result is a neighborhood where good programs fill quickly and parents often compete for the same limited spots.
The provider mix in Ballard is diverse. You'll find large established centers near Market Street, Montessori programs in converted houses, nature-based preschools that take advantage of Golden Gardens and the ship canal trail, and licensed home daycares scattered through the residential blocks east of 24th. That variety is one of Ballard's strengths — if you know what you're looking for.
Expect to pay $1,500 to $2,800 per month for full-time care in Ballard. Center-based infant care runs $2,100 to $2,800. Toddler and preschool rates at centers range from $1,500 to $2,200. Home daycares are typically 15–25% less than centers for comparable age groups. Some Ballard programs include meals and supplies in tuition; others don't. That gap can add $100–$200 per month to your actual cost.
Ballard's most established programs — especially the centers that have been operating for 15+ years — maintain year-round waitlists. For infant care, starting your search 6 to 12 months out is standard. Newer programs and home daycares tend to have shorter wait times, but they also have fewer total spots. If you're flexible on start date, it's worth calling programs directly even if their website says waitlist only.
Every provider above has been individually researched. Scores reflect inspections, staff data, pricing transparency, and editorial review — not advertising or self-reported claims.
