What we found

Lakewood stretches across a large swath of Denver's western suburbs, and that size creates genuine variety in the childcare market. You'll find national chains along major corridors like Wadsworth and Colfax, independent centers in commercial plazas, church-affiliated preschools, and a deep bench of licensed home daycares in the residential neighborhoods between Green Mountain and the foothills. Lakewood's lower commercial rents translate directly into more affordable childcare.

The diversity of Lakewood's population is reflected in its providers. Bilingual programs (primarily Spanish-English) are common, and several home daycares cater to specific cultural communities. The Jefferson County school district also runs preschool programs at several Lakewood elementary schools, offering another affordable pathway.

What Childcare Costs in Lakewood

Lakewood childcare runs $1,000 to $1,800 per month for full-time care. Center-based infant care costs $1,400 to $1,800. Toddler and preschool rates at centers range from $1,100 to $1,600. Home daycares are typically $1,000 to $1,400 — some of the most affordable licensed care in the Denver metro. CCCAP subsidy acceptance is widespread in Lakewood, and Jefferson County's preschool programs offer additional cost relief.

The Waitlist Reality

Lakewood's larger supply of providers means waitlists are shorter than in Denver proper — typically 1 to 4 months for infant care, with toddler and preschool spots often available within weeks. Home daycares sometimes have immediate openings. If you're searching urgently, Lakewood is one of the best places in the metro to find quality care quickly.

What to Watch For

  • Geographic spread. Lakewood is large. A provider in east Lakewood near Denver is a very different commute than one near Green Mountain or the foothills. Search within your specific corridor rather than all of Lakewood.
  • CCCAP and Jeffco preschool. Lakewood has higher CCCAP participation than most Denver-proper neighborhoods. If you qualify for Colorado's childcare subsidy, you'll find more accepting providers here. Jefferson County preschool programs add another subsidized option for 3- and 4-year-olds.
  • Bilingual programs. Lakewood's Spanish-English bilingual programs are a genuine asset. If language immersion matters to your family, Lakewood has more affordable bilingual options than central Denver.
  • Home daycare quality. Lakewood has a deep home daycare market. Colorado licenses home providers for up to 6 children (or up to 16 with waivers and additional staff). Tour a few even if you're leaning toward a center — the best home daycares offer lower ratios and more individualized attention.

Every provider above has been individually researched. Scores reflect licensing records, staff data, pricing transparency, and editorial review — not advertising or self-reported claims.
