What we found

Baker sits just south of downtown Denver, bounded by Broadway to the east and the South Platte River to the west. It's one of Denver's most walkable neighborhoods -- dense, diverse, and increasingly popular with young families drawn to its central location and relatively affordable housing compared to Highlands or Cherry Creek. The childcare landscape reflects that mix: you'll find established independent programs, bilingual providers, home daycares in the residential blocks, and a few centers serving the growing population of dual-income households.

Baker's proximity to Platt Park (south) and downtown (north) means families here often search multiple neighborhoods. If a Baker program is full, Platt Park, Lincoln Park, and Capitol Hill are all within a short drive.

What Childcare Costs in Baker

Baker childcare runs $1,300 to $2,100 per month for full-time care. Center-based infant care costs $1,700 to $2,100. Toddler and preschool rates range from $1,300 to $1,800. Home daycares are typically $1,200 to $1,600. Baker prices are mid-range for central Denver -- below Cherry Creek and Highlands but above Aurora and Lakewood.

The Waitlist Reality

Baker's growing family population has increased demand, and waitlists run 3 to 8 months for infant care. Home daycares and smaller programs fill through word of mouth. Preschool-age spots are more available, especially after September. Denver Preschool Program credits apply at participating providers for 4-year-olds.

What to Watch For

  • Urban density. Baker is dense and parking is limited. Check drop-off logistics carefully -- some programs have dedicated lots, others rely on street parking.
  • Bilingual options. Baker's diversity supports Spanish-English bilingual programs. If bilingual education matters to your family, Baker has options that many other Denver neighborhoods don't.
  • DPP credits. Denver Preschool Program credits apply at participating providers for 4-year-olds. The credit is income-based but available to all Denver families.
  • Baker vs. Platt Park. These neighborhoods share a border. A program in north Platt Park is a 5-minute drive from south Baker. Search both.
